This is something I can agree with

“It’s no coincidence that most of those who are obsessed with population
growth are post-reproductive wealthy white men: it’s about the only
environmental issue for which they can’t be blamed.”

Quote from Stop blaming the poor. It’s the wally yachters who are burning the planet in the Guardian.

Shamelessly reproduced from Matt Zimmerman’s post.

Of course population growth causes some of the problem, but I am pretty sure the fact that more and more people are becoming ‘developed’ causes way more. Of course telling people in developing nations to not become as big a problem is not really an option, which makes this a big challenge.

I am, in fact, happy with the fact that my life has improved, as a consequence of Brazil becoming more developed, and my family being able to have more comfort (including more technological gadgets, transport means, and being able to eat out more often =P), but here’s the challenge of the century: what do we do to fix this?

  1. Gustavo, as one of the wasteful hordes in the USA, I applaud Brazil’s advances, and I especially applaud you for recognizing that ithey’re going to be a problem for all of us down the road.

No, we can’t tell developing countries to hold off. That’s stupid and unfair, not to mention impractical. What we (and now you) need to do is figure out ways we can have our comfort, our “technological gadgets, transport means, and being able to eat out more often”, in an affordable and sustainable way, so that everybody on the planet can enjoy a 21st-century lifestyle without driving the biosphere to ruin.

And as computer guys, I assume we’re going to be a leading part of that solution. So, just keep improving Debian, keep thinking of new and better ways to do things, and we’ll all be happy in the end!

  2. Oh, this is a really complex dilemma. I dare not try to point a solution. I think that time itself will tell. And with the advancement of Skynet, with regard to robotic technologies and artificial intelligence, I think we have little time to solve this problem!

  3. To put it bluntly, the biggest problem leading to population growth seems like religion, both for telling people to “go forth and multiply”, and for proscribing almost all methods of birth control.
